Birthday Nutella Cake

Even though we LOVE Nutella here at SWEETTABLESCAPES, we’ve never actually made a cake with this ingredient. We made cookies reminiscent of this awesome hazel-nutty confection (see here) that were soooo delicious, but never a cake. Well, today we’re fixing this major oversight and baking Nigella Lawson’s Nutella Cake!!

IMG_0003The request came from a 15-year old Nutella fan who wanted to celebrate her “quinceanera” with a worthy dessert; so Sweettablescapes got to work and added some fondant flowers to the finished cake for a colorful and feminine touch and to match some paperflower crowns the guests were going to wear….FullSizeRender copy


You’ll need:

for the cake

  • 6 large eggs (separated)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 125 grams soft unsalted butter
  • 400 grams Nutella (1 large jar)
  • 1 tablespoon Frangelico (or rum or water)
  • 100 grams ground hazelnut
  • 100 grams dark chocolate (melted)

for the icing

  • 100 grams hazelnuts (peeled weight)
  • 125 ml double cream
  • 1 tablespoon Frangelico (or rum or water)
  • 125 grams dark chocolate
